Mexico 2011 | Volunteer service, weltwärts
When I was accepted by AFS for the weltwärts program at the end of 2010, I was taken – to a boy. For me, the fact that our relationship didn't survive the year abroad is of less importance. On the other hand, my third coming out, so to speak, in a small town in Central Mexico was extremely interesting. I told my host family about it after a good two months, they didn't seem to have any problem with it, even if problems arose, especially towards the end of my stay. At that point I had a Mexican one new and of course wanted to spend time with him. Suddenly, my host mom started comparing straight to gay relationships and showing me why it would be bad if I met him now and that she would think differently if I were with a girl. Apart from that, I didn't have any problems during my one-year stay abroad, found "like-minded" friends, but also got along very well with my colleagues, acquaintances, guest relatives and students and tried to broaden their horizons in this regard in the long term!
